Prison Island

Prison Island, also known as Changuu Island, is a small island located approximately 5 kilometers off the coast of Stone Town in Zanzibar, Tanzania. Historically, it was used as a quarantine station for yellow fever patients and later became a prison for rebellious slaves. Today, it serves as a popular tourist destination known for its beautiful beaches, historical significance, and giant tortoises.

The Giant Tortoise Sanctuary is one of the main attractions on the island. It houses Aldabra giant tortoises which are among the largest in the world and can live for over 100 years.

The are also remnants of the old prison and other historical buildings which provide insight into the island’s past. Our excellent guides will tell stories concerning their history and significance in the slave trade.Lastly, the island features stunning white sandy beaches where visitors can relax, sunbathe, or enjoy a picnic while taking in breathtaking views of the Indian Ocean.

The boat ride to the Island takes about 30 minutes and includes a scenic view which adds to the overall experience.
